Biography

Percy describes his philosophy towards business support and development as 'not one fits all'. Every creative individual will develop their own process.

A wealth of experience

Percy Emmett has worked in the creative industries for the last 20 years. His experience includes setting up and running a range of creative businesses of his own, including a women's wear design company, a publishing company, a ceramics business and a graphic design agency.

Providing training and support

In 2001, he designed and ran a training programme for the Prince's Trust, aimed at setting up creative industries throughout the East Midlands. Funded by the Arts Council East Midlands and the East Midlands Regional Development Agency, this successful one-year programme was a national first for the Prince's Trust. Of the 55 businesses set up during the year, 85% are still trading - some of which Percy still mentors.

Covering all aspects of creative business

In 2003, he became Commercial Development Manager for The Public, a community arts organisation based in West Bromwich. Responsible for 60 incubator workspaces for new businesses, he also ran SICE (Social Inclusion to the Creative Economy), a £1.5 million business start up programme for the Black Country and South Birmingham. As part of this project he created an invaluable ‘toolkit' for start up businesses, plus an interactive CD Rom designed to cover all 13 creative industries.

Initiating programmes

Percy now works freelance, providing bespoke training programmes for people starting up or already working in the creative industries. His experience includes working for many national organisations including:

  • NESTA - Percy has run NESTA's Insight Out programme at the Screen Media Lab, Birmingham City University, for the last two years and also at Falmouth University, Bournemouth University and Spike Island, Bristol, in collaboration with SWRDA (the South West Regional Development Agency).
  • Creative Alliance, Birmingham - Over the last two years Percy has run four separate Makers and Shapers programmes for Creative Alliance Birmingham, training business students to NVQ accredited level 3. The programme is funded by the LSC (Learning and Skills Council) and Business Link Birmingham.
  • ECCA North - Working in collaboration with the Innovation Centre, Percy spent a year initiating and piloting a student advisor scheme for Central St Martins (CSM) which is still run following his guidelines.

Mentoring and advice

In addition to the range of training programmes, Percy offers one-to-one business support and mentoring for start-up and next level businesses. He can also provide training for other creative industry trainers and advisors.
